Advice: Maid of Honor speech

3 Jun

This week, Lovely Little Details blog had some great advice on giving a bridal party speech.  I am the maid of honor in one of my friend’s weddings this Labor Day, and I am already nervous! I have not begun writing the speech, and despite having plenty of time (exactly 3 months), I will be printing these tips that I took away from her post to ease my worries as the speech time approaches.

  1. Think of the speech as an outline with a beginning, middle, and end.
  2. Start off by giving “congrats” to the couple and give background on who you are and your relation to the bride.
  3. Add personal touches & antidotes.
  4. For timing: keep the speech 2-3 minutes. When in doubt, short & sweet never fails!
  5. Finish with a cheers and raise your class to the happy couple.
  6. In anticipation, practice makes perfect! Feel comfortable with the speech.
Here are a few tips of my own:
  1. When picking a personal story or 2 to share, don’t keep it too focused on inside jokes that only a select few- or no one else- at the party will understand.
  2. A few sips of champagne will calm your nerves, but you don’t want to be known as the maid of honor who realllly likes her booze. (LLD blog mentions this too).
  3. To keep from shaking, stand semi behind the bride and touch the chair now and then looking down at her. It keeps you from moving around too much and will look sweet.
  4. Laugh, cry, make it your own!
  5. Don’t try to be someone you are not- if you aren’t always a jokester, don’t start throwing out all these jokes that will make you feel out of your comfort zone. Be you.
  6. BREATHE.
That being said, I will let you all know how this goes after my speech on Sept 3, 2011.
Do you have any speech giving advice?
